Season's Greeting to you all.
A new year lies in front of us again and what a year it has started out to be! Continuous rainfall across the country resulting in many areas being declared disaster areas, which is no doubt going to cost millions in flood damage repairs. The resultant rising water table is now creating increased concerns about decanting of acid mine water, particularly in the low lying areas West of Johannesburg. Certain farm dams are already showing signs of this with dead fish floating on the surface. What is acid mine water?
Acid Mine Drainage (AMD).
Many of the gold mines that founded our countries wealth have been closed and are closing. The mining of this precious mineral has for decades taken preference over the preservation of our water resources. The shafts and tunnels now unused fills up with water which oxidizes with the sulphide mineral iron pyrite making the water highly acidic and poisonous for human and animal consumption;as well as killing plant life. This water then fills the mine, rises to the top, and starts decanting into the environment, polluting our streams, dams, rivers and wet-lands.
This process has manifested itself as early as 2002 when acid mine water started to decant into the low lying areas around Krugersdorp- Randfontein. It is estimated that the level of the acid water today is less than 60 meters below Johannesburg. Environmental agencies, activists, and scientists are working with the Government
Agencies to find a solution to this problem which it is estimated will make the electricity crisis pale in comparison if it is allowed to worsen. Very alarming indeed, especially as there is not much we the general public can do about it except to make sure the water we and our families drink is pure and healthy. This can only be done with any certainty by purifying your own water particularly, drinking water.
The choice is clear! It is not only AMD but there are other contaminants reaching our water that can have detrimental effects to our health. With the latest technology
available to us we are fortunate to be able to filter our water ourselves without any inconvenience or onerous processes. An inexpensive filtration system in our kitchen can supply the whole family with pure and healthy drinking water. Yet, we spend hundreds of rands to keep our pools sparkling clean but, take a chance on our health by not filtering our drinking water and spending hard earned money on unhealthy soda drinks, and beverages.
YOU CAN CONTINUE TO TRUST YOUR LOCAL AUTHORITY OR YOU CAN BE PROACTIVE AND TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO ENSURE YOUR DRINKING WATER IS ALWAYS PURE AND SAFE !
Thought for the month.
